Leaving a Legacy of Compassion – Why Michael Gives to Campfire Circle

When Michael Beerden reflects on his life, it’s filled with stories of resilience, compassion, and quiet heroism – qualities that have shaped his decision to leave a legacy gift to Campfire Circle in his will.
A retired nurse with a long career in trauma and neurosurgery, Michael knows firsthand the impact illness has on families. As a young child, he was often hospitalized himself. “I became a very experienced patient,” he says. “You learn quickly how hospitals work and how important it is when someone is kind to you.”
His life of service as a healthcare professional showed him the power of empathy, but it was his personal experiences that deepened his connection to Campfire Circle.
A Personal Connection to Campfire Circle
Michael had been donating to Campfire Circle (formerly Camp Ooch) for over 20 years, long before he saw the impact up close. When a young boy close to his heart – whom he considers his grandson – became a Campfire Circle camper, it changed everything.
“I realized that I’d been giving, but now someone very close to me was receiving,” he says. “That deepened my connection and made me want to do more.”
Michael saw how camp created a safe space for children with cancer (and now, serious illness) to simply be kids – without stares, judgment, or isolation. “At camp, everyone’s in it together,” he says. “If you have no hair or need to see the doctor often, you’re not alone. You’re with peers. That makes all the difference.”
Why Michael is Leaving a Gift in His Will
Michael is thoughtful and practical about his giving. “I’m not rich,” he says with a smile, “but I know I’ll pass away with more than I need. I’d rather give that to causes that matter to me.”
He’s chosen to leave $25,000 to Campfire Circle in his will – a decision grounded in his values and his belief in supporting vulnerable kids. “This gift allows me to keep giving, even after I’m gone,” he says. “It’s like 40 more years of monthly donations all at once.”
For Michael, it’s not about recognition. It’s about values. “We all become memories one day. But to be remembered as someone who made a difference – that’s important to me.”
“We can’t all be Campfire Circle volunteers. But we can all give. If we have more than we need, why not share it?” – Michael Beerden
Advice for Others Considering a Legacy Gift
Michael is clear: making a will isn’t as daunting as it seems – and it’s worth doing now, not later.
Here are a few steps, inspired by his journey:
- Talk to a Lawyer or Advisor
Michael went to his lawyer to revise his will and added Campfire Circle as a beneficiary. “If you’re already making a will, include what matters most to you,” he advises. - Decide on an Amount or Percentage
You can leave a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate. “I chose $25,000 so that it’s a clear and meaningful gift,” Michael says. - Reach Out to Campfire Circle
Michael suggests contacting the team at Campfire Circle directly: “They’re helpful and kind. They’ll walk you through the process.”
A Legacy of Hope
Michael’s story is not just about generosity – it’s about living with purpose and compassion. “The greatest satisfaction in life comes from helping others,” he says. “I’ve seen it in my patients, in my career, and now through this gift.”
His message to others is simple: “Why not include Campfire Circle in your will? Every little bit helps. And what better legacy than giving joy and hope to a child who really needs it.”
