Breaking Barriers for Kids like Rosie

When Rosie was two and a half, she was diagnosed with pilocytic astrocytoma (PA), a non-malignant brain tumor, that her mom Katy describes as “persistent and life-altering.”
Rosie’s condition means she has limited mobility and low vision. For Rosie, Campfire Circle is a place where she can participate fully and safely.
“There’s nowhere else we’d feel safe sending her for a week on her own,” says Katy. “It’s the only place where her medical needs are understood and managed without us having to explain everything.”
At camp, Rosie is able to dance, sing, catch fish, and even try high ropes in a wheelchair—all while knowing medical care is close by.
Rosie’s brother, Owen, attends camp, too. As the older sibling, he often feels like he has big responsibilities. But at camp, he has room to grow, make friends, and just be himself.
The family recently attended Family Camp together, where for once, everyone got to relax—including the caregivers. “We made slime. We laughed. We got to have fun without worry,” says Katy.
Campfire Circle is proud to have Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility certification at both our Toronto office and Muskoka sites. From a fully ramped camphitheatre to a barrier-free fishing dock with sun and shade options, every space is designed for inclusion. Our wheelchair-accessible high ropes course, modular dining hall and arts & music centre, and paved paths ensure all kids—regardless of ability—can experience the joy of camp.
For the first time, Rosie joined every activity and made real friends. “I was thrilled to hear her talk about other kids—not just adults. Usually, she’s on the sidelines with grown-ups,” says Katy.
“Kids in our type of family don’t always get the chance to just be kids. And Campfire Circle is a place they can just go and do it,” she adds.
