Hello from Hamilton!
When I introduce myself to new families in Hamilton, I start with: “Hi! I’m here to make your stay a little more fun and a little less boring. We can play games, make crafts, do scavenger hunts. I’ll do my best to make sure that whatever YOU love to do, you can still do in the hospital!
I love getting silly and goofy every single day, being a big kid ready to play—giving kids and parents or caregivers a chance to get out of the hospital mentally and emotionally—even if they can’t leave physically. In the hospital you get to really know campers and families. You see them for days, weeks, months, and sometimes, years. Respecting our campers and being able to match their energy, whether high or low, is critical.
My favourite moments include seeing a kid giggle for the first time, hearing a kid laugh so hard it echoes down the hallway, seeing caregivers beaming when their child lights up. These little glimmers remind me that our programs bring joy, that laughter heals pain, and that connection overcomes isolation.
I know that every dollar donated multiplies into smiles, into friendships, into healing. I get to see the transformation through slime, silly dances, and shaving cream pies to the face. I hope to continue to help in this healing for a long time, but that isn’t possible without folks like you!
