The Privilege of “No” in Hospitals

People wonder how I introduce myself to kids and families in the hospital. I usually say, “Hi! I’m with Campfire Circle. We work here on the unit, and we specialize in the fun stuff. We play games, we do crafts, we play music, and we’re here for you whenever you need it. I see your pajamas are from the Maple Leafs. Do you want to make a hockey card? Or build characters of the players and have them race down string ziplines? How about we sing a hockey song?”

Every day, I see the beautiful and joyous responses from families and kids. We can see the positive impact of the program, and it feels really rewarding. When kids are living in the hospital, their choice is limited so much. And we’re one of the only people they can say “NO” to. If kids aren’t feeling up to it that day, we are happy they feel comfortable enough to tell us, and they know that we’ll be back again tomorrow. It’s a great privilege that families trust us during the most vulnerable parts of their medical journey.campfire circle staff member with family in the hospital

Just recently, I was painting with a kid, and he said, “I was going to take a nap, but I’m glad I didn’t because this is more fun than watching dreams.” For me, it’s an honour to help provide immediate joy and support to kids and caregivers in some of the darkest times of their lives. But when you support Campfire Circle, you are providing more than just fun and laughter. Our programs are created with intention to promote overall health and well-being and help kids build self-confidence and resilience now and in well into the future. Families tell me that they never would have thought anything good could come from their situation, until they found Campfire Circle. It’s heart-warming.
