“I give because every kid needs camp: I know I did.” Ali’s Story

I was 12 going on 13, just about to start grade 8, when I was diagnosed with leukaemia. At first, everything happened very fast. But my treatment lasted for more than three years, and those days, weeks, and months in isolation were long. Three years felt like a lifetime. This was over 30 years ago, and they didn’t have the hospital programs we have today. There was a tiny playroom in the hospital, but it was full of games for four year olds.

Like a stroke of magic, we heard about camp, and I jumped at the chance to go! I loved going to summer camps and the cottage. I was so excited to attend camp I could hardly sleep, my hopes were high, and camp was more than I could have even imagined. Arts, crafts, and music! Campfires! Waterskiing! I love waterskiing!

I recently joined the Spark Club and I now give monthly. Monthly giving is easy and I don’t have to think about it. It makes me happy every time I see my donation and get special updates and stories from camp. It takes me right back to those long sunny days and chilly cabin nights. I give because every kid needs camp: I know I did. Kids need time away from their sickness. Cancer is scary for everyone, especially for little kids. I am proud to do my part to keep camp going. I want to know that camp will get to a 100th anniversary, and keep doing what they’ve always done for kids and families.
