Happy National Nursing Week

To celebrate National Nursing Week, we are highlighting a few of Campfire Circle’s dedicated nurses. They have made an invaluable difference in the lives of so many kids and families through their exceptional care and empathy.

Meet Maram

Maram has volunteered at camp for four years and has been a nurse at camp for three years.

Here’s why she keeps coming back.

“I love the environment at camp! I love seeing the smiles on kids’ faces outside of the hospital, getting to enjoy their childhood away from all of the appointments and treatment. It’s really a magical place where kids who have been through so much get to enjoy being kids. It’s also so special seeing them create friendships with others who are going through the same thing. As a nurse at camp, it’s so rewarding getting to be a part of a team that allows kids and teens on treatment the opportunity to create lifelong memories at the same time as providing their caregivers peace of mind knowing they have an amazing medical team watching out for them.  It is such a privilege to be a part of the medical team that makes a difference in the lives of the campers and their families.”

Meet Chantal

Chantal has been a volunteer nurse with Campfire Circle for seven years.

“Camp makes my heart full! As a children’s ICU nurse I rarely get to see kids when they are well—Campfire Circle allows all kids to enjoy what camp has to offer regardless of their needs or abilities. It is my absolute favourite thing to be able to support a camper’s medical needs in the MedShed [at Muskoka] or Body Shop [at Rainbow Lake] and see them jump in the lake or tackle the ropes course 10 minutes later! One of my favourite experiences at camp over the years has also been supporting family camp—to work with children and families in a different context than I am used to inside the hospital.”

Meet Sydney

Sydney has been a Campfire Circle nurse volunteer for three years. She’s volunteered at our Ottawa Day Camp, our overnight sites, Rainbow Lake and Muskoka, and worked as a bus nurse to monitor kids on their ride to overnight camp.

She tells us why she loves it so much.

“I keep coming back to camp because of the magic that is Campfire Circle. Especially from a nursing perspective, we often see campers when they are in the hospital setting receiving treatment. But at camp, we get to see them be kids —having the opportunity to play, connect, and be themselves while enjoying all the activities that camp has to offer.”

“Campfire Circle has created the most amazing community of campers, volunteers, and medical staff. Although we are all working towards the goal of ensuring that the campers have the ability to experience the joys of camp. We are also filling our cup. It truly fills my heart and camp has created an environment that fosters togetherness. I do my very best to ensure that I can spend as must time as I can at camp. It has been the most amazing experience that I could have asked for and I cannot wait for the summer programming to begin. I am counting down the days.”
